This piece was inspired by the bumpy road that people with mental illnesses and their families sometimes have to travel. While the path is often rough with the occasional pothole, the journey is always a precious one.

Mental Health America (formerly known as the National Mental Health Association) is the country’s leading nonprofit dedicated to helping ALL people live mentally healthier lives. Mental Health America of Greenville County is one of more than 320 affiliates nationwide, that represent a growing movement of Americans who promote mental wellness for the health and well-being of the nation – everyday and in times of crisis. 

In the upstate area, MHAGC is a crucial and vital force in the fight to improve the lives of those who are struggling with mental illness. As statistics suggest, mental illness will affect one in every five people. It's likely that someone you know or care for is affected by mental health challenges.

Our Vision

We believe that with consistent and dedicated efforts, we will achieve victory over mental illness. We are funded by private donations, memberships, memorials, bequests, grants, fundraising activities, community funds, and the United Way.

Our Legacy

In the 17th and 18th centuries, individuals with mental illnesses underwent great suffering at the hands of American society. Viewed as demon-possessed or characterized as senseless animals, they were subject to deplorable treatment that often included physical and mental abuse and the use of heavy arm and leg chains. Through the tireless work of people who cared to see a change in this practice, the shackles and chains were eventually dropped. And in the early 1950's, The National Mental Health Association (NMHA, now Mental Health America), issued a call to asylums across the country for their discarded chains and shackles. In April 1953, NMHA melted down these inhumane bindings and recast them into a sign of hope: the Mental Health Bell.
