Mental Health Matters

Mental Health Matters! Education Program aims to promote positive mental health by emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and providing access to tools to better achieve it.  Because mental health issues affect each of us, and mental illnesses are brain diseases that can happen to all of us,  the program activities are diverse in order to best serve a heterogeneous population with varying goals, abilities, experiences, cultures, and needs for confidentiality.  The program enables a participant to:

  • Recognize the value of positive mental health
  • Identify characteristics of both poor and positive mental health
  • Respond to stress, anxiety, and depression with personal and community resources

Mental Health Matters! Education program offers a wealth of innovative and unique features which include, but are not limited to:

  • Education Programs:  The I’m Thumbody self esteem program, Stress Management 101, Parenting Under Pressure, Depression: More Than Just the Blues, Mental Health and You, A Call for Compassion: The Church and Mental Health, Suicide: The Forever Decision, and other mental health topics.   These programs are rooted in the philosophy of fighting fears with facts and can be geared toward children, teens, adults or specific audiences.
  •

  • Screenings for Early Intervention:  Confidential mental health screenings for depression, bipolar, generalized anxiety, post traumatic stress, and post partum depression are offered 365 days a year.  Screenings are offered by appointment, on a walk in basis, or on-line.  Screenings are also held at various community health fairs, health clinics, community sites, and specialized events such as National Depression Screening Day.
  •

  • Resource Center:  A resource library with current books, videos, facts sheets, and brochures on varied mental health topics is open to the public during business hours and after hours by request.   Educational materials may also be mailed or delivered to individuals and/or agencies.   Informational packets are also delivered to schools, social services agencies, and other community based programs throughout the year.
  •

  • Best Practice Suicide Prevention Programs including nationally recognized Question, Persuade, and Refer Trainings for Gatekeepers and Signs of Suicide Program for middle and high schools.
  •

  • Community Collaboration:  Through community partnerships, media contacts, literature distribution, health fairs, mental health screenings, educational events, and a speaker’s bureau, the Mental Health Matters! Education program increases awareness of community resources and creates exposure opportunities for early intervention.
  •

  • Value to the Community:  The stigma that surrounds mental illness is often more disabling than the illness itself.  Mental Health Matters!  Education Program is a powerful catalyst in fighting fears with facts and providing tools for early detection and intervention of mental illness.
