In 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officially designated 988 as the new 3-digit phone number for mental health crisis and suicide prevention services. This indicated the beginning of a 2 year implementation plan to get 988 operational by July 16th, 2022. These calls will be routed through the Nationals Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Senate then passed the bill in October of 2020.
