Just over two years ago, the country launched the easy-to-remember 988 phone number for those experiencing mental health, substance use, or suicidal crises. 988 is like 911, but it’s specifically for mental health emergencies. If you’re feeling anxious, stressed, or even thinking about hurting yourself, calling or texting 988 connects you with trained counselors who care and are ready to help.
It has been an honor to be part of the National Lifeline, providing support and a listening ear to anyone who reaches out, anytime, for any reason. Each month, we strengthen our collaborations, enhance the quality of our services, and improve technology to ensure the best routing and access for everyone.
Recent technological improvements include providing ASL services via chat and video phone. Additionally, there has been a nationwide rollout of geo-routing. It’s important to note that geo-routing does not provide 988 workers with specific location details like 911 does. Instead, it ensures that your call is routed to the center closest to your physical location, rather than the area code of your phone number. This helps connect you with counselors familiar with local resources and cultural contexts, which can be critical in times of crisis.
Even with these advancements, one thing remains constant: 988 is here to support you, no matter what. If you or someone you know needs help, don’t hesitate to call or text 988. Help is always just a call away.
Let’s spread the word about 988—it could save a life.
