On a cool, rainy day in early March, a full crowd gathered in South Carolina’s State Capitol rotunda to hear messages of hope and healing for mental health. Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention – South Carolina Chapter, South Carolina Department of Mental Health, Mental Health America of South Carolina, and NAMI South Carolina, the State Capitol Day was an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health needs and advocate for state policy changes for improved mental health and suicide prevention in the Palmetto state.
State legislators and other South Carolina officials took to the podium to express to the gathered crowd their support for these advocacy efforts, with Bill Lindsey, Executive Director of NAMI South Carolina, introducing each speaker. Among the topics discussed, lawmakers also delivered a concurrent resolution declaring Wednesday, March 6, 2024, Mental Health Advocacy Day in South Carolina.
