April is Volunteer Appreciation Month!

While we appreciate our incredible volunteers year-round, this is a special time to shine a light on the tireless efforts of those who donate their time and hearts to our cause. Every shift, our volunteers answer calls, chats, and texts from people in crisis, offering hope, empathy, and a lifeline when it’s needed most.
To prepare for this critical role, our volunteers undergo over 80 hours of rigorous training, equipping them to listen without judgment, offer guidance without pressure, and support others through their most difficult moments. Each year, the compassionate volunteers at MHAGC answer thousands of calls without expectation of reward—no paycheck, no trophy, no tangible benefits—only the knowledge that they’ve helped someone in need.
Every volunteer has their own reasons for joining MHAGC, but one unbreakable thread connects them all: a deep commitment to helping others. Some have experienced their own struggles with mental health and are passionate about offering support to those facing similar challenges. Others have felt such profound hopelessness that they once considered suicide themselves and now dedicate their time to helping others find their way back from that darkness. Some have endured the heartbreaking loss of a loved one to suicide, while others come from backgrounds in counseling, social work, or psychology and choose to use their skills for good.

One of the most powerful tools a volunteer has is the simple act of listening. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel disconnected—but a compassionate ear can be the first step toward healing. At MHAGC, volunteers are trained not only to listen but to actively engage, creating a safe space where anyone can express their feelings without fear of judgment. Their genuine compassion and unconditional acceptance can be life-saving for someone who feels alone and unheard.
As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Month, we invite you to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of the volunteers at MHAGC. Their unwavering commitment to supporting those in crisis is nothing short of extraordinary, and the impact of their work extends far beyond the calls they answer. For many, a volunteer’s kind words and warm conversation mark the first step toward healing, offering hope where none seemed to exist.
To all the volunteers who have chosen MHAGC as the place to graciously donate your time, energy, expertise, and heart—we thank you. You make the world a better and brighter place, one call at a time.
